Alex OLEKSYN

Alex Oleksyn, born on March 28, 1930, in Leofnard, Saskatchewan, peacefully passed away on August 26, 2023, surrounded by his family. Growing up, Alex worked on the family farm before moving to Alberta, where he became a pipeline inspector, often walking long distances along the pipelines. In 1952, he married Olga Boyko, and together they raised six children on a farm in the Yellow Creek, SK area for 26 years. In 1978, Alex and Olga purchased the Wakaw Lodge Motel and Esso garage, managing the motel for 13 years. Throughout his life, Alex had various occupations, including a town councillor, school bus driver, ambulance driver, car salesman, and gas attendant at Crossroads in Wakaw. He even drove the senior bus long after retirement. Alex was known for his kindness and interest in others’ lives, always making sure to connect with people. Family held a special place in his heart, and his passing will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him.

Alex is survived by his children: Barry (Karen) Oleksyn, Sherrye (Jack) Brayshaw, Bev (Jim) Pust, and Kelly (Carolynn) Oleksyn. He is also mourned by his daughters-in-law, Leona Dull and Lisa Oleksyn. Alex leaves behind numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His siblings, Helen Schreiner, Steve (Sylvia) Oleksyn, Nick (Elsie) Oleksyn, Ed Oleksyn, sister-in-law Francis Harrison, and brother-in-law Bill (Christine) Boyko, also survive him. Alex was predeceased by his wife, Olga, his sons Bobby Oleksyn and Kevin Oleksyn, his parents Bill and Bessie Oleksyn, his parents-in-law Peter and Ann Boyko, and several siblings and in-laws. In appreciation of the compassionate care, he received, the family extends their gratitude to the staff of Rosthern Hospital and Lakeview Pioneer Lodge. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 1, 2023, at St. Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Lepine, SK, with Reverend Archpriest Patrick Powalinsky presiding. Contributions in Alex’s memory can be made to St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Lepine, SK. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Marc Blondeau of Kushneryk Funeral Service in Wakaw, SK.
