Anita MAY

Anita Christine May, a talented artist, dedicated educator, and loving nurturer, lived a life devoted to sharing her gifts of music and language, spreading inspiration, passion, hope, and joy within her community. Born on January 15, 1973, Anita courageously battled mental illness since 2010, overcoming her depression and embracing the world with renewed wonder. For over a decade, she used her own evolving journey as a platform to raise awareness for mental health, employing music, dance, and art as mediums to express the importance of mental care. While she ultimately lost her battle, Anita will forever serve as an inspiration to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her, particularly those who also face mental health struggles. Anita is survived by her beloved husband and best friend, Brian; her cherished sons, Brendan (Carisa) and Jared; as well as her loyal furry companions, Annie and Hobbes. She will eternally be cherished and remembered by her mother, Lois (O’Neil), and her late father, Carl Van Geel (1982). Additionally, Anita will be deeply missed by her dear brother, Jason Van Geel (Lianne). She was the devoted daughter-in-law of Joe and Thelma May and the sister-in-law of Joe May (Leah), Bev Beauchamp (Murray), and Barb Rola (Dave). Anita will be greatly missed by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Anita’s love for her family knew no bounds, extending to both her biological and chosen family. Their love for her will endure forever. Those who wish to pay their respects may do so during the visitation at Williams Funeral Home on Saturday, October 7, located at 45 Elgin St. in St. Thomas, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. Subsequently, on Saturday, October 28, a Celebration of Life will be held to honor and remember the true beauty and magic that was Anita. Instead of sending floral arrangements, guests are encouraged to consider making a donation to the Anita May Music and Mental Health Foundation through Williams Funeral Home.
