Anna Summers

Sister Anna Margaret Summers, also known as Sister Mary Emma, passed away on August 21, 2023 at Mount St. Joseph in Peterborough. Born in Ottawa, Ontario in 1933, Sister Anna was one of eight children. She is survived by her brother James, as well as several nieces and nephews. The Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada mourn the loss of Sister Anna, who was a cherished member of their religious community. Sister Anna’s parents, Brigid Emma and Patrick John Summers, as well as her siblings Linus, John, Ernest, Patrick, Bernard, and Sister Eunice CSJ (Mary Theresa Eunice) predeceased her.

Prior to joining the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peterborough in 1953, Sister Anna had a four-year career at the Currency Department of the Royal Bank of Canada. After becoming a Sister, she adopted the name Sister Mary Emma. Sister Anna dedicated 29 years of her life to working in the Business Office of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Peterborough. Following her retirement from the hospital, she served as the Assistant to the General Treasurer for the Congregation, handling various business responsibilities with a warm smile and willingness to help at any moment.

In addition to her religious and professional commitments, Sister Anna also found time to volunteer with the Canadian Lung Association for approximately five years and worked for four years in the Children’s Catechetical Program at St. Anne’s Church, teaching children aged 4-6. She actively participated in the Board of St. Joseph’s Hospital from 1990 to 1994 and served as a board member at St. Monica’s Home for Specially Challenged Adults from 1991 to 1999. Sister Anna dedicated her Tuesday evenings to organizing bingo events to raise funds for the support of this home. She is fondly remembered for her infectious laughter, excellent financial acumen, and her genuine love for children.

A private Mass of the Resurrection will be held at Mount St. Joseph in Peterborough on Thursday, August 24 at 1:30 p.m. Following the service, interment will take place at Highland Park Cemetery in Peterborough.
