Barbara KNOBEL

Barbara Knobel Verboomen, a beloved member of the community, passed away on August 3, 2023, at the age of 87. She was surrounded by her family at the Suroît Regional Hospital in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, QC. Barbara was born in Etten-Leur, a small town in the Dutch province of North Brabant, and she experienced the hardships of war during her childhood. In 1952, at the age of 17, she immigrated to Canada with her family and settled in Ottawa. Barbara was predeceased by her husband Georges J Verboomen, son Louis, parents Godfrey and Cornelia, sister Cora, and brothers Kees, Peter, and John. She is survived by her children Georges R, Mary Ann, Chris, and Jean-Louis, as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Barbara will always be remembered for her many talents and passions. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, and quilting, creating beautiful patchwork quilts and knitted garments for her loved ones. She devoted her skills to charitable causes, supporting various organizations through her craft. Barbara’s faith played an integral role in her life, and she actively participated in the Women’s Auxiliary at Saint-Thomas Aquinas Church in Hudson, Qc. She also had a green thumb and took pleasure in nurturing stunning flower beds in her Saint-Lazare home. Known for her baking abilities, her apple pies, lemon meringue pies, and Christmas treats will be greatly missed. Barbara shared many joyous moments with her husband on fishing trips, where she showcased her angling talents.

The loss of Barbara leaves a void that will be felt by her family and all those who knew her. She was an extraordinary woman who demonstrated remarkable strength and resilience. Her legacy as a caring and devoted mother will forever live on in the hearts of her children. The family expresses their heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated staff at the Suroît Regional Hospital in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, QC, for their compassionate care.

A religious service celebrating Barbara’s life will take place on August 26 at 2:00 p.m. at Saint-Lazare Church. Condolences can be offered starting from 1:00 p.m. Donations, in lieu of flowers, can be made to the Fondation de l’hôpital du Suroît. Barbara’s memory will continue to inspire and comfort those who knew and loved her.
