Barrie RAHN

Barrie Morell Rahn, a resident of Courtenay, peacefully passed away on July 24 at Nanaimo Regional Hospital due to Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Miller-Fischer variant. He was 75 years old. He was a beloved husband to Mary Diane Keeling, a loving father to David John, and a cherished grandfather to Matthew Barry, Zoe Nicole, and Sophie Rose from the San Jose, California area.

Born on September 19, 1947, Barrie was the child of Otto John Rahn and Jerrine Polly Appleby in Owen Sound, Ontario. He had a close bond with his siblings, including his deceased brother Jack, and his surviving siblings Jane Hergott of Kitchener, Judy Penner of Owen Sound, Robert Rahn of Hanover, Ontario, and Ruth Bindas of Ohio.

Barrie had numerous passions in life, including fishing, skiing, and playing hockey. He worked at Nortel Communications for 30 years, splitting his time between Canada and Mountain View, California. Barrie and his wife, Diane, were childhood sweethearts and celebrated 55 years of marriage. In 1999, they relocated to the Comox Valley, where they welcomed many relatives and friends to their beautiful seaside home.

Known for his sociable nature and friendly demeanor, Barrie had a wide circle of friends in the area. He was a great conversationalist and always remained calm and collected. It is truly heart-wrenching that he was afflicted by this devastating disease during his later years. Barrie wanted to express his gratitude towards the medical staff who provided care for him.

In remembrance of Barrie, a small gathering will be held at their home in the Fall. He will always be remembered as an extraordinary individual.
