September 23, 2023

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Charlotte Porteous (nee Wright) of Calgary, AB. She peacefully left us on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at the age of 86, while at the South Calgary Health Campus. Charlotte’s upbringing on a farm in Irricana instilled in her a deep connection to farming, which she carried on with her husband, Jerry, in Crossfield until their retirement in 1995. They then settled in Priddis Greens, where they relished in playing golf and spending winters in Arizona and Hawaii. Charlotte also delighted in traveling extensively. Following Jerry’s demise, Charlotte resided at The Manor Village Fish Creek Park for the next five years, where she formed cherished friendships.

Charlotte attended Olds College in 1955, enrolling in the Home Economics program. She actively participated in numerous organizations within the Crossfield community for many years. Notably, she was a dedicated member of Starlight Chapter #109 of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years and served as a past matron. From 1974 to 1985, Charlotte and Jerry ventured into the Quarter Horse business, experiencing great success and cultivating a genuine passion for their cutting and working cow horses. During her retirement, Charlotte found joy in tending to her flower garden and was a proud member of the Gyrate Club of Calgary until her passing.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Cheryl Rockafellow (Greg) of Crossfield, AB, and Joanne Butz of Calgary, AB. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Justin Rockafellow (Jenna), Cody Rockafellow, Garrett Rockafellow (Amanda), Taylor Butz (Janice), and Laura Butz (Mitch), as well as her great-grandchildren, Ayla, Belle, Harper, Weston, Theodore, Zack, and Brooklyn. Sadly, she was predeceased by her beloved husband of 58 years, Jerry, in 2017.

The Porteous family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated medical staff at Calgary South Health Campus, as well as the compassionate caregivers and staff members at The Manor Village Fish Creek Park. To honor Charlotte’s extraordinary life, a celebration will be held at the Crossfield & District Community Hall on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. A private interment will precede at the Crossfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made directly to S.T.A.R.S. (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society). Condolences and cherished memories can be shared and viewed with Charlotte’s family at http://www.MHFH.com. As a living tribute, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area in memory of Charlotte Porteous.
