April 19, 2023

Deanna Wood Deyholos passed away peacefully in Calgary on August 19, 2023, after a rapid deterioration in her health. Surrounded by her beloved family, she transitioned from this world to the next. Deanna was born in 1939 to a closely-knit family who farmed near Glenwood, Alberta. She cherished memories of joyous gatherings at home, riding a horse to school, and summer jobs in Waterton. While raising her two young sons, she pursued her education at the universities of Alberta, Lethbridge, and Utah State, earning a B.Ed. In 1970, Deanna married John, her second husband, and they were soon blessed with a third son. The family resided in Calgary and Edmonton at different times, with Deanna endearing herself to both communities. Her passion for transforming houses into homes, honing her watercolor skills, and cultivating lifelong friendships was truly admirable. During her remarkable 20-year career as an elementary school teacher, Deanna touched numerous lives. In retirement, she embarked on adventures around the world, embracing captivating experiences in Europe and Samoa. Above all, she treasured moments spent with family, particularly her nieces, nephews, 13 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. She brought them endless joy through entertaining games, crafts, and baking sessions.

Deanna’s unwavering faith as a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints led her to embrace various avenues of service. She served as the president of the Relief Society, and her commitment also extended to being a full-time missionary in Philadelphia, aiding Liberian refugees from 2008 to 2009. Additionally, she dedicated her time as an ordinance worker in the Cardston and Calgary temples.

Preceding Deanna in death were her husband, John, and brother, Lowell Wood. She is survived by her sons Steven (Sheryl), Jason (Brenda), Michael (Paulette), as well as her siblings Rex (Collette) Wood, Karen (Jack) Oviatt, Judy (DeLynn) Edstrom, and Greg (Jean) Wood. She also leaves behind her sister-in-law, Lorna Wood, and a large extended family.

A Funeral Service commemorating Deanna’s life will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Parkland Chapel, 14540 Parkland Blvd SE, Calgary, on Monday, August 28, at 11:00 am. Prior to the service, a visitation period will take place from 10:00 to 10:45 am. The funeral will be accessible via live broadcast at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81574435780. Following the service, a graveside ceremony will be conducted at 3:30 pm in Glenwood Cemetery, Glenwood, Alberta. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Diabetes Canada, Deanna’s preferred charity. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Pierson’s Funeral Service, which can be contacted at http://www.piersons.ca or 403-235-3602.
