Della Mae Wood (nee Porter)

Della Mae Wood, aged ninety-six, peacefully passed away on October 26, 2023. Born in Annabella, Utah, during the Great Depression, she was raised by an extended family and a supportive community. Despite the hardships, she never felt poor, as the love surrounding her was abundant. Introduced to the world of books at a young age, Della Mae’s mind expanded and flourished. With the opportunity for higher education and extensive travel, she continued to broaden her horizons. Della Mae dedicated twenty-five years of her life to teaching children, and her love for them was reciprocated. Her cheerful disposition, infectious smile, and resourcefulness marked her presence. She brightened every room and conversation, always ready to assist those in need.

Della Mae leaves behind her husband of forty-eight years, Thomas Wood, who will deeply miss her. Alongside Thomas, she is survived by their four children: Kurt Hill (Cyndi) of Kalispell, MT, Kristin Hill (Scott Bartholomew) of Escondido, CA, Sean Wood (Patricia Richards) of Calgary, and Stephen Wood (Amy Mah) of Draper, UT. She was also cherished by her nine grandchildren: Casey Boswell, Will Hill, Wesley Hill, Alexandra Cameron (Joshua), Brianna Bartholomew, Marcel Bartholomew, Tristan Wood, Rhianna Wood, and Noah Wood. Additionally, she leaves behind seven great-grandchildren: Kristian, Alex, Natalie, Asher, Annabelle, Tucker, and Woodrow. Della Mae is survived by her brothers, LeRoy Porter (Vonda) of Sunnyvale, CA, and Blaine Porter of Grafton, WV. She was predeceased by her father Earl Porter (1947), mother Afton Nebeker Porter (1980), daughter-in-law Elana Chin (2018), sister-in-law Aniene Porter (2010), and sister-in-law Thea Porter (2023). Numerous friends and an extensive extended family also mourn her departure.

A Funeral Service in honor of Della Mae will take place on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at 10:30 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – Heritage Chapel in Calgary. Prior to the service, a visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:15 am. The service will be live-streamed online. Subsequently, the graveside service and interment will be held at the Temple Hill Cemetery in Raymond, Alberta at 3:30 pm. On May 25, 2024, a celebration of her remarkable life will be held in Annabella, UT. In lieu of flowers, Della Mae would appreciate donations to support local libraries, honoring her deep love for books and knowledge.
