Derek Cooper, age 87, sadly lost his brave battle with pancreatic cancer on October 17, 2023. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Veronica Cooper, and their two children, Susan Partridge (Shaun) and Robin Cooper (Teresa). Derek was a proud grandfather to Meaghan Partridge (Nico), Tristan Partridge, Rhys Partridge (Nadine), Steven Cooper (Sara), and Christine Cooper (Tyler). He also leaves behind his cherished great grandchildren, Riley and Teagan Cooper.

Born in London to Dulcie and Sydney Cooper, Derek was the youngest of three siblings. At the age of two, his family relocated to a quaint village near Aberystwyth, Wales, where they resided throughout the war. It was amidst the stunning Welsh hills that Derek spent his formative years. After the war, at the age of nine, the family returned to London, although they held onto their cherished cottage, which remained a beloved retreat. Derek’s deep affinity for the Welsh countryside and the great outdoors remained with him for his entire life.

At 18, Derek embarked on a nine-year adventure, joining the British Royal Navy as a Petty Officer. His service allowed him to travel the world and experience numerous escapades. During his naval tenure, Derek crossed paths with Veronica Johnston, a remarkable WRN whom he married in 1962. Together, they forged 61 years of enduring marriage.

Following his honorable service in the Navy, Derek pursued a fulfilling career as an Electrical Engineer, where he established lifelong friendships. In 1974, he and Roni made the decision to settle down in Calgary, Canada. While Derek always admired the beauty of his adopted country, his heart forever yearned for his homeland, Wales.

A man of boundless energy, Derek indulged in various outdoor activities, including golf, fishing, skiing, sailing, and swimming. In his younger days, he also passionately played rugby and cricket. An avid gardener, Derek found true contentment amidst nature. Moreover, he shared a deep and affectionate bond with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, relishing every moment spent with his family. Derek’s altruistic nature extended beyond kinship, as he was always willing to lend a helping hand to both loved ones and friends in need.

To honor the remarkable life Derek led, a Memorial Service will be held on October 28, 2023, at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Calgary, AB. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to a charity of personal choice. The legacy of Derek Cooper will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those he touched throughout his lifetime.
