Desiderio “Desi” Santos, a man who lived a rich and eventful life filled with laughter, family, faith, and good food, peacefully passed away on July 5, 2023 in Richmond, BC at the age of 91. Desi had been happily married to his loving wife Norma for 68 years, cherishing every moment spent together.
Born in Manila, Desi pursued his passion for the arts by studying architecture and earned his Masters Degree from the University of Madrid under a scholarship. During his time in Madrid, he not only mastered the Spanish language but also developed a deep wanderlust for exploration, which stayed with him throughout his lifetime. After returning to the Philippines, Desi achieved remarkable milestones as the youngest professor and later the youngest Dean of Architecture at the University of Santo Tomas.
In 1975, Desi made the decision to immigrate to Vancouver with his beloved wife and children, embarking on a new chapter in his life. He tirelessly worked to provide for his family and expressed gratitude for the countless opportunities he was given. Retirement did not slow him down; instead, Desi continued to actively engage in traveling, painting, cooking, volunteering, and doting on his grandchildren.
A devout Catholic, Desi served as a mentor to numerous individuals and was esteemed as a fun-loving and remarkable friend to many more. He possessed a remarkable sense of humor and was known for captivating audiences with his captivating life stories and quick wit. He will forever be remembered for the profound impact he had on the lives of those around him.
Desi is survived by his loving wife, five children, nine grandchildren, and one great-grandson. To honor his memory, prayers will be held at St Paul’s Parish in Richmond on July 17 at 5:30 p.m., followed by a Funeral Mass and reception on July 18 at 10:00 a.m. at the same location. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests considering a donation to St Vincent de Paul or any other preferred charity, in honor of Desi’s compassionate spirit.
