Douglas Hickman

We are deeply saddened to announce the unexpected passing of Douglas “Doug” Hickman of Saint John. Doug was born on May 13, 1952, in Saint John to Shirley Scott and the late Don Hickman. He was the cherished husband of Claire (Phillips) Hickman and together they shared a beautiful life. Doug’s untimely demise occurred on Saturday, July 29, 2023, while engaging in his greatest passion, sailing on his beloved boat, Black Sea.

For the past four decades, Doug, along with his brother Brian, owned and operated H. H. Hickman & Sons. They dedicated themselves to this business, leaving behind a remarkable legacy. Although Doug’s professional achievements were remarkable, his true love and passion were in sailing. He embarked on numerous adventures, exploring the Atlantic and Caribbean waters, and his love for the sea was unmatched. The Saint John Power Boat Club, the Nova Scotia Schooner Association, NB Lodge #22, and the Cruising Club of America were just some of the prestigious organizations Doug was a proud member of.

Doug will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Claire, his mother, Shirley, and his sons, Greg and Josh. His brother, Brian, sister-in-law, Joan Cosman, and his nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews will also hold his memory close to their hearts. In addition, he will be forever remembered by his dear friends, Scott and Sandy Piekarski and Ernest Hamilton. His loyal canine companion, Nova, will also carry his memory with her.

A Celebration of Doug’s Life will be held on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, from 3:00 – 7:00 PM at the Saint John Power Boat Club, located at 100 Kennedy Street, Saint John. Brenan’s Funeral Home, located at 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, is entrusted with the arrangements. For those desiring, donations may be made in Doug’s memory to the Shriners. Online tributes and condolences can be shared at http://www.BrenansFH.com.
