Douglas STOKES

Douglas Millard Stokes, aged 85, sadly passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at Victoria Hospital in London. He was preceded in death by his father, Albert William Stokes, and his mother, Ruth (McLean) Stokes. At the young age of 6, Douglas experienced the loss of his natural mother, Gladys Hildred (Dalley) Stokes, with the birth of his sister. He is survived by his sister Joanne Malvern, brother-in-law Bob, niece Jennifer (David) D’Aprile, nephew Bryan (Leigh) Malvern, and three great-nieces, Isabella, Angelica, and Penelope D’Aprile. Jordan Stewart, who was considered as a son to Douglas, also survives him. Their bond was further strengthened during numerous memorable summers spent together at Douglas’ cottage on Dorcas Bay.

Douglas accomplished much in his career, finding great fulfillment as a Teacher and Vice-Principal with the Chatham Kent Board of Education. He acquired his education at London Teachers College and the University of Windsor. His artistic talents were widely recognized, and his high school peers at CCI fondly remembered his humorous cartoons. Despite being born premature at only 3 pounds, Douglas grew to stand at an impressive height of 6 feet 4 inches. This stature, combined with his charismatic presence, made him larger than life, particularly in the kitchen while dinner was being prepared.

Throughout his final years, Douglas resided contentedly at Ashwood Manor Retirement Home in Lambeth, where he received dedicated care. He remained funny and irreverent until the end, endearing himself to those around him. He will be deeply missed and affectionately remembered by his loved ones. Douglas’ final resting place will be beside his paternal grandmother and natural mother in Woodland Cemetery, Hamilton. The family will receive guests on Thursday, November 2, 2023, at McKinlay Funeral Home located at 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. The funeral will take place at the funeral home on Friday at 11:00 a.m. In remembrance of Douglas, memorial donations to a charity of choice are welcomed.
