Douglas STOKES
Douglas “Doug” Millard Stokes, age 86, peacefully passed away on October 29, 2023, at Victoria Hospital in London. He was born on November 5, 1937, to Albert William Stokes and Ruth (McLean) Stokes. Sadly, at the tender age of 6, Doug lost his biological mother, Gladys Hildred (Dalley) Stokes, due to the birth of his sister. He is survived by his beloved sister, Joanne Malvern, her husband Bob, his niece Jennifer (David) D’Aprile, his nephew Bryan (Leigh) Malvern, and three cherished great-nieces, Isabella, Angelica, and Penelope D’Aprile. Additionally, Doug considered Jordan Stewart of London as his own son, a bond solidified by the countless summers they spent together at his Dorcas Bay cottage.
Doug’s passion for education led him to graduate from London Teachers College and the University of Windsor, igniting a gratifying career as a Teacher and Vice-Principal with the Chatham Kent Board of Education. Alongside his dedication to academics, he possessed a remarkable talent for art and a delightful sense of humor, renowned for his high school cartoons at CCI. Despite entering the world as a mere 3 pounds, Doug’s towering height of 6 feet 4 inches seemed to transcend his humble beginnings, particularly when he would stand in the midst of the kitchen while dinner preparations took place.
During his final years, Doug found solace and contentment at Ashwood Manor Retirement Home in Lambeth, where he received exceptional care. He maintained his whimsical and irreverent nature until the end, endearing himself to those around him. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished. Doug will be laid to rest beside his paternal grandmother and biological mother at Woodland Cemetery in Hamilton. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Funeral Home located at 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham, on Thursday, November 2, 2023, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday at 11:00 a.m. Should one wish to honor Doug’s memory, memorial donations can be made to a charity of choice.
