Douglas STOKES

Douglas Stokes, lovingly known as Doug, passed away on October 29, 2023, at Victoria Hospital in London. He was born on Millard, in the year 1937. Doug was preceded in death by his father Albert William Stokes and his mother Ruth (McLean) Stokes. Unfortunately, he also lost his natural mother, Gladys Hildred (Dalley) Stokes, at the age of 6 when his sister was born. He is survived by his sister, Joanne Malvern, and her husband Bob, as well as his niece Jennifer (David) D’Aprile, his nephew Bryan (Leigh) Malvern, and their three great-nieces Isabella, Angelica, and Penelope D’Aprile. Additionally, Doug considered Jordan Stewart of London as his own son, as their bond grew stronger during the many summers they spent together at his cottage on Dorcas Bay. His academic achievements include graduating from London Teachers College and the University of Windsor, where he pursued a career as a Teacher and Vice-Principal with the Chatham Kent Board of Education. In high school at CCI, Doug’s artistic talents shone through his infamous cartoons. Despite being born weighing only 3 pounds, he grew to be an imposing figure at 6 feet 4 inches tall. Doug’s presence was larger than life, especially when he stood in the kitchen while dinner was being prepared. During his final four years, he found joy and comfort at Ashwood Manor Retirement Home in Lambeth. Even until the end, Doug’s sense of humor remained intact, making him beloved by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed. Doug will be laid to rest in Woodland Cemetery in Hamilton alongside his paternal grandmother and natural mother. Family and friends are invited to visit the Funeral Home, located at 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham, on Thursday, November 2, 2023, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. A Funeral service will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday at 11:00 a.m. In memory of Doug, memorial donations in his name can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
