Edgar (Ed) Taam, M.Arch, was born in Tianjin, China, and later immigrated to Canada. He pursued his education at McGill University and went on to earn his Master of Architecture from the University of Manitoba and Washington University. Ed played an instrumental role in the revitalization of Chinatown as part of the Chinatown Development Corporation in Winnipeg. Additionally, he ventured into the restaurant business, co-founding Cathay House, a Chinese restaurant, with his partners Albert Wong and George Yuen. Alongside his first wife Gina, Ed successfully owned and operated two Tim Hortons franchises. He also made significant contributions to China’s culinary scene by establishing Canaburger, a fast-food restaurant. As an entrepreneur, Ed ventured into construction and continued his work in Vancouver.

Even after retiring, Ed’s passion for architecture never waned. He enthusiastically engaged in conferences and maintained his professional license. Known for his kindheartedness, generosity, and easygoing nature, Ed had a natural ability to strike up conversations with people from all walks of life. An avid food lover, he particularly enjoyed indulging in good meals, black coffee, hot rice, and cookies – which led his children to affectionately nickname him “Cookie Monster.” In addition to his many talents, Ed was a skilled handyman who could fix nearly anything. He took pleasure in leisurely drives through Stanley Park, finding solace and joy in the beauty of nature.

Ed is preceded in death by his mother, Cheng Chi Fun, father Tam Lai Kin, older brother Eugene, and first wife Gina Meei-Ling Jyu. He is survived by his son Jason (Christine), daughter Lindsay (Maxym), grandchildren Mikaila, Noah, Isabella, and Yarema, as well as his second wife of twenty-one years, Li Fang.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during the visitation at Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Burnaby on August 3rd, between 4:30 to 6:30 pm. A funeral service will follow on August 4th at 1:00 pm.
