Elaine Elizabeth Donaldson

Elaine Elizabeth Donaldson, a beloved sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, entrepreneur, and cherished friend to many, passed away in February 2023. She was born in March 1940 to Peter and Elizabeth George, known for their famous Peter’s Ice Cream on West Broadway. Elaine was the eldest of five siblings (Natalie, Phillip, Peter, and Paul) and received her education at Crofton House School and later at UBC, where she pursued a degree in teaching. It was during this time that she met her future husband, John “Wally” Donaldson, who affectionately called her “Smally”.

After initially working as an elementary school teacher, Elaine’s entrepreneurial spirit led her to explore various ventures. One of her most significant accomplishments was the founding of Student Travel Abroad, a company that facilitated educational trips to Europe and other destinations for Canadian schoolchildren. Elaine had a deep passion for travel, and through this venture, she was able to share her love for exploration with countless young students.

Elaine’s devotion to her family was unwavering. She was a dedicated wife to John, a committed mother to Lauren and Ian, and a loving grandmother to Maxwell, Lachlan, Owen, Chase, and Oscar. She had an infectious love and affection for her loved ones and radiated joy wherever she went. Elaine was known for her vibrant social life, attending reunions, being knowledgeable about airport codes, and even having coding skills before it became common knowledge. She held a remarkable skill in quoits and was the expert when it came to decorating the Christmas tree.

Anyone fortunate enough to have crossed paths with Elaine, whether on the ski slopes in Whistler, on the SS Uganda in the Mediterranean, or in her home on the west side, will remember her fondly. Her positive spirit and kind-hearted nature will continue to inspire all those who loved her. May Elaine rest in eternal peace alongside her beloved John.
