Elsie was predeceased by her husband, George Edward Wendel, in 1972, her son Kenneth Charles Wendel in 2023, her parents Karl and Marie Koenig, and her sister Emma.

Elsie was born and raised on a farm near Mere Lake, Alberta. She attended school until Grade nine at Lakemere School and completed her high school education at Stony Plain Memorial High in the spring of 1948. On November 27th of the same year, she married George Wendel, and together they raised six children on a farm near Beach Corner, Alberta. Tragically, George passed away at an early age, leaving Elsie to raise their children on her own while managing the farm. Despite the challenges, Elsie was known for her hard work, dedication to family, and nurturing nature. Alongside farming, she cultivated expansive gardens and occasionally worked outside the home while raising her young family. Elsie even obtained her driver’s license and delighted in driving to town for shopping or enjoying the surroundings.

In 1988, Elsie faced another difficult period when her son Greg was involved in a severe car accident that resulted in serious injuries. After a year in the hospital, Elsie brought Greg home and cared for him tirelessly over the next 32 years. She was an exceptional caregiver and renowned for her culinary skills, especially her baking. Elsie frequently hosted family gatherings at her home and loved sharing her creations. Her passion extended to flower gardening, ensuring her flower pots and three acres of lawn looked immaculate every year. Elsie remained an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Beach Corner until her last day.

Throughout her life, Elsie encountered various hardships, including the untimely deaths of her husband, son Greg’s accident, and the loss of her son Ken. However, she faced each challenge with unwavering strength and resilience. Elsie never complained about what she lacked but found joy in what she possessed. Her radiant smile served as a constant reminder of her positive attitude. A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, located at 1533 Parkland Drive, Parkland County, on Friday, September 22, at 2:00 p.m. In memory of Elsie Wendel, donations can be made to the St. John’s Lutheran Church – Cemetery Endowment Fund.
