Elvira SCHINDEL

Elvira Doris Schindel (nee Martens) passed away on July 9, 2023, at the age of 95, leaving her family in deep sorrow. She was born in Waldheim, Saskatchewan, on March 26, 1928, as the second of seven children. The family later relocated to Saskatoon, where Elvira completed her high school education. In 1947, she married the love of her life, Bill Schindel, and together they raised three children. Elvira dedicated herself to raising her children and spent countless hours tending to her expansive garden and cooking beloved family recipes. As her children grew older, she pursued a career as a medical receptionist/secretary, enjoying her time in the workforce. Weekends and holidays were cherished opportunities for family camping trips, exploring various lakes in northern Saskatchewan. In the early 1960s, Elvira and Bill developed a deep affection for Candle Lake and constructed a cottage. Upon retirement, they spent nearly six months each year living in this idyllic location. Elvira developed a keen interest in golf during her fifties and it quickly became her passion. She delighted in spending hours on the golf course and, whenever she wasn’t golfing, she relished long walks. Elvira is survived by her children: Terry Ponath, Barry (Donna) Schindel, and Ron (Nancy) Schindel. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Nicole Ponath, Mike (Ellen) Ponath, Justin (Jaimee) Schindel, Christine (Ryan) Green, Stephanie (Brett) Husky, and Curtis (Dana) Schindel. Additionally, she leaves behind great-grandchildren: Kyra, Jesse, and Bennett Ponath; Gradyn and Ayla Green; Riel, Ada, Emily, Billy, and Weston Husky; Brighton Boyko and Leo Schindel. Elvira is further survived by her sister, Lee Boor, in Ottawa, and sisters-in-law Gladys, Helen, and Katy Schindel. Preceding her in death were her husband, Bill; son-in-law, Lyle Ponath; parents, John and Tina Martens; two brothers, Arthur and Norm; and three sisters, Alice, Delphine, and Alta. A private family graveside service will be conducted at a later date. To express condolences and share cherished memories, please visit http://www.saskatoonfuneralhome.com.
