LEITNER, Ernestine

Ernestine Leitner, born on June 8, 1930, in Lac La Biche, Alberta, passed away suddenly on June 7, 2023, at the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre in Fort McMurray, Alberta. It is with great sadness that we announce her passing. Ernestine will be deeply missed by her children, Geraldine, Joe (Eileen), John (FayAnne), Peggy (Roger), Audrey, Lisa (Steve), as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Patrick Ladouceur and Felicite Ladouceur (Boucher), her siblings Cecil, Florence, Rene, Prosper, Fred, and Rose Anne, her husband Frank, and her children David, Ron, and Diane.

Ernestine started her life in Lac La Biche and later moved to Edmonton, Alberta, where she worked at the GWG Factory. She eventually settled in Fort McMurray, Alberta, and worked at the Waterways Salt Company and the Oil Sands Hotel. Beyond her professional life, she was a loving homemaker who had a passion for cooking, baking, canning, gardening, sewing, and quilting. Ernestine was known for her excellent craftsmanship as a seamstress, often sewing for others, and creating beautiful quilts.

Those who knew Ernestine will remember her as a kind and funny woman who remained strong and positive despite the hardships she faced throughout her life. She had a deep love for animals and enjoyed various activities such as camping, cookouts, berry picking, curling, and spending time with friends. She had a passion for music and even recorded a song when she was young. Ernestine had a delightful sense of humor and loved making people laugh with her jokes and playful teasing. She instilled resilience and strength in her children, and although she didn’t hold back her opinion, she always showed compassion, love, and gratitude.

Ernestine was fondly referred to as “Mom” by many individuals whose lives she touched. She left a lasting impact on everyone she encountered, and her memory will forever be cherished. Ernestine will be greatly missed, always loved, and never forgotten, as she holds a special place in our hearts.

A Memorial/Mass service will be held in Ernestine’s honor at St. John’s Baptist Catholic Church in Fort McMurray, Alberta, on Friday, September 29, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. Her Interment/Burial will then take place at the Abasand Cemetery on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. Cremation has already been conducted. We extend our gratitude to Robert Anderson Funeral Services for their professionalism and assistance, Ben Boyle for providing the beautiful wooden box for the Interment/Burial, Steve McCaig for the final touches, and Wanetta White for her kindness, generosity, and ongoing support throughout this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in memory of Ernestine. As we bid farewell, we hold onto the cherished memories we have of her, knowing that she rests in peace. Je t’aime maman, jusqu’à ce que nous nous revoyions (Love you mom, until we meet again).
