Evereld Macpherson (Dawn)

Dawn (Josephs) Macpherson, born in 1932, peacefully passed away on October 10th, 2023 at Lion’s Gate Hospital, surrounded by her four children and other close family members. Hailing from Duncan, BC, Dawn moved to Victoria in 1943, where she attended St. Margaret’s Girls School and began her track and field training at the age of 11. Throughout her life, Dawn displayed remarkable athleticism and competed as a high jumper and long jumper for the Canadian track and field team at the 1952 Olympic games in Helsinki, Finland. Her dedication to sports continued, with Dawn participating in badminton and tennis, even scissor-kicking over the net during celebrations after her victories, well into her late 70s.

Alongside her sporting achievements, Dawn worked as a Junior Draftsman for the provincial Forest Service in Victoria. It was here that she met her beloved husband, Grant, whom she married in 1954. Together, they raised four children, navigating the challenges of their ever-changing locations due to Grant’s employment with Canadian Industries Limited. Dawn’s resilience and commitment to family shone through as she established a community for her loved ones in each new city they called home. Beyond being a loving and devoted mother, she also contributed to her family’s income by working as an Avon Lady for over 30 years, even continuing her involvement until the age of 85 due to the cherished friendships she formed with her customers.

Dawn’s kind and generous nature, accompanied by her sense of humor and adventurous spirit, will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her. She is survived by her children—Neil (and Cathy), Robert (and Lingling), Diane Gray (and Don MacDonald), and Linda Fraser—alongside eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Dawn’s husband Grant Macpherson (1998) and partner Harry Restiaux (2013) predeceased her. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Amica Edgemont Village, Vancouver Coastal Health care aides, and the medical team of the Palliative Care Unit at Lion’s Gate Hospital. Instead of flowers, donations to Zajac Ranch for children in memory of Dawn would be greatly appreciated. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Thursday, November 30th, at 2 pm at Boal Chapel, located at 1505 Lillooet Rd, North Vancouver.
