Frances DeMerchant

Frances “Fran” DeMerchant, born on July 31, 1946, peacefully passed away on October 31, 2023, at Hospice House in Fredericton after a brave three-year battle against cancer. Fran was the daughter of Margaret and Robert Baird. Throughout her life, she was supported and loved by her husband of 57 years, Warren, and their children: Kelly (Russell) Holt, David (Julie), and Mark (Chantal). Fran is also survived by her cherished grandchildren: Gregor, Mollie, Kaleigh, Melody, Jonathan, Will, and Dominique. She leaves behind her brothers Roy (Linda) and Alfred (Charlene), as well as half-sisters Vicki and Pam. Fran will be dearly missed by special cousins Dawn and Vicki, sisters-in-law Linda, Anne (Steve), and Fern, and brothers-in-law Don and Blair. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers James and Victor, sisters-in-law Marilyn, Liz, and Florence (Doll), and brothers-in-law Dick and Bob.

Fran attended Perth High School and pursued a career in nursing after graduating from the Saint John School of Nursing. She began her nursing journey in Saint John, NB, before finding her place in the Obstetrics unit of the Doctor Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton. Fran formed deep bonds with her colleagues, leading to lifelong friendships, cottage trips, and countless adventures. She took pride in mentoring young nurses and was deeply devoted to her patients, particularly the new mothers and babies she cared for.

Fran was a beloved wife, mother, relative, grandmother, and friend. She found solace in reading books and actively participated in her book club. Fran cherished time spent traveling with her family and friends. Her unconditional love and selflessness were felt by all, especially her precious grandchildren, for whom she always made time.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all those who visited, called, or sent well wishes over the past three years. They are especially thankful to Joan, Marge, Helen Jean, and Dawn for their unwavering support of Fran throughout her journey. Rev. Wandlyn Snelgrove’s prayers and visitations during this challenging time are deeply appreciated. Dr. K. Stymiest provided exceptional care, including home visits, and the entire staff at Hospice House in Fredericton showed great kindness and compassion during Fran’s final weeks.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at the Christ Church (Parish Church) in Fredericton, NB, at 3:30 pm. Following the service, a reception will take place at the same venue. Interment is scheduled for Sunday, November 5, 2023, at Larlee Creek Cemetery in Perth Andover, NB, at 1:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice House in Fredericton, The Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of personal choice. Brunswick Funeral Home, Perth-Andover, NB, is entrusted with the arrangements.
