George “Howard” Stafford, aged 91, peacefully passed away on August 3, 2023 in Invermere, BC, with his daughter Gayle by his side. Born on April 14, 1932, in Calgary, Howard spent his early childhood years in Turner Valley, AB. In 1948, he moved with his parents to Wetaskiwin, AB, where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Doreen Thorn, in 1955. They settled in Calgary and raised their three children together.

Howard pursued a successful career in the oil and gas industry after obtaining a geology degree from the University of Alberta. He began working for the Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB), following in the footsteps of his family’s long-standing involvement in the industry. During his time at the ERCB (now AER), Howard specialized in oil and gas reserves evaluation, oil sands, regional geological studies, and the administration of regulatory policies. After his retirement in 1987, he served as an advisor to the Alberta Securities Commission.

Following his retirement, Howard and Doreen made their permanent residence at their second home in Fairmont Hot Springs. He indulged in his passion for golf, spending his summers playing in Fairmont and winters in the USA and Mexico. Howard also excelled in various other sports throughout his life, including curling, hockey, and baseball.

Howard was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Doreen, and their son Grant. He is survived by his son Rod Stafford (Cindy Oliver), his daughter Gayle Dougall (Morley), and his grandchildren Curtis Stafford and Adrian Sanchez-Avery (Haydn), along with their mother Cindy Stafford. Additionally, he leaves behind four great-grandchildren, Blakely, Keaton, and newborn twin girls Hannah and Whitney.

The family extends their gratitude to Dr. Mike Walsh of Invermere, BC, for providing Howard with exceptional care throughout the years. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the health charity of your choice. Further details regarding the memorial service will be announced at a later date.
