August 3, 2023

George “Howard” Stafford, aged 91, peacefully passed away on August 3, 2023 in Invermere, BC. His beloved daughter, Gayle, was by his side during his final moments. Born on April 14, 1932, in Calgary, Howard spent his early childhood years in Turner Valley, AB. In 1948, he relocated to Wetaskiwin, AB with his parents. It was in Wetaskiwin that he met his high school sweetheart, Doreen Thorn, whom he married in 1955. Howard and Doreen settled in Calgary, where they raised their three children.

Howard’s illustrious career in the oil and gas industry began after he completed his geology degree at the University of Alberta. He joined the Energy Resources Conservation Board, following the footsteps of his ancestors, who had also worked in the oil and gas industry. During his tenure at the ERCB (now AER), Howard was deeply involved in the evaluation of oil and gas reserves, as well as regional geological studies. He also administered provincial regulatory policies. In 1987, Howard retired from the Energy Resources Conservation Board, after which he served as an advisor to the Alberta Securities Commission.

Upon retiring, Howard and Doreen permanently moved to their second home in Fairmont Hot Springs. Howard dedicated his summers to playing golf and fulfilling his passion for the sport during the winters by heading south to the USA and Mexico. Sports were an integral part of Howard’s life, as he actively engaged in curling, hockey, and baseball.

Following the loss of his wife of 67 years, Doreen, and his son Grant, Howard is survived by his son Rod Stafford (Cindy Oliver), his daughter Gayle Dougall (Morley), and his grandchildren Curtis Stafford and Adrian Sanchez-Avery (Haydn) and their mother Cindy Stafford. Additionally, he leaves behind four great-grandchildren, Blakely, Keaton, Hannah, and Whitney.

Howard’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Mike Walsh of Invermere, BC, for his exceptional and compassionate care over the years. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to a health charity of personal choice. Details regarding the memorial service will be announced at a later date.
