Gertrude Gwendolyne Makowecky (Gert)
It is with great sadness the family of Gertrude (Gert) Gwendolyne Makowecky (nee McConnell) of Calgary announce her passing March 14, 2024 at age 90. Gert was born in Saskatoon, September 10, 1933, and married Peter Makowecky in September 1955. She was predeceased by husband Peter, brothers Ted and Orville, and sisters Dorothy and Lorraine. She leaves to cherish her memory sons Dale (Brenda), Dean, Wayne and Miles (Kim) and grandchildren Ashley, Sean, Eric, Krista, Christopher and Danielle, 7 great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In her youth she eagerly participated in almost every sport including baseball, basketball, speed skating and won a provincial championship in badminton. Gert was a devoted wife and mother and supported her family unconditionally, occasionally working in the family business (The Kitchen Centre) or with her sister Dorothy (Hub City Curling Rink).
She liked to bake, knit (unlimited dishcloths), garden, play “31”, (who needs rules anyway), visit the local casino and indulge in the occasional glass of red wine.
Gert enjoyed her last years at Father Lacombe Care Centre, Calgary where she was known for her sassy comebacks. As the loving ‘hub’ of the family and heart of the home she will be sorely missed.
A memorial will take place in Saskatoon – time and location to be announced.
