Harry RIVERS

Harry William (Bill) Rivers, a resident of Spruce Grove, AB, passed away on August 27, 2023, at the age of 78. Born on February 9, 1945, in Barrie, Ontario, Bill spent his childhood in Calgary, Alberta. He attended elementary, junior high, and high school in Calgary, living in Parkdale before moving to Altadore. After starting his own family, Bill ventured north, first to Devon in 1979 and then to the Yukon in 1984. He had many exciting experiences up north before returning to the Edmonton/Spruce Grove area in 2002.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Betty Rivers, his brother Garry, nephew Jason Haden, and his beloved canine companion, Buddy. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Betty Lee, his sons Scott (Isabelle) and Bill Jr (Liz), and his grandchildren Logan, Mason, Abby, Liam Oliver, Kaden, Scarlett, and Liam. Bill’s siblings, Sherron Haden (Gary), Jim (Judy), Randy (Andrea), Kelly Kennedy (Randy), and his “brother from another mother” Keith Bailey, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family, also mourn his loss. Additionally, special mention is made of Ellen (Marcus) Meyers and their daughter Jana from Germany, whom Bill considered as part of his family.

In his youth, Bill actively participated in Scouts Canada and continued to be involved until his 70s, attending Jamborees worldwide. He took pride in his accomplishments, which included being a member of the RCMP Auxiliary, a founding member of Al Shamal Shriners of Edmonton, a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Order of the Eastern Star, and Associated Canadians Travelers. Bill was a devoted fan of the Edmonton Eskimos, having attended 13 Grey Cups. His time in the Yukon brought him immense joy, especially during his annual fishing trips to Haines, Alaska. However, his greatest love was his sons and grandchildren, through whom his legacy lives on.

Betty Lee and the family would like to express their gratitude to the U of A Hospital, Unit 3D, and the Westview Health Centre in Stony Plain for the compassionate and exceptional care provided to Bill.

A Celebration of Life for Bill will be held on September 17, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, located at 215 McLeod Ave, Spruce Grove. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bill’s name to Courageous Companions Canada through their website at http://www.courageouscompanions.ca.
