Helen SWEENEY

Helen Agnes Sweeney (formerly Sexsmith), a resident of Durham and previously Dornoch, passed away on September 29, 2023 at Rockwood Terrace, Durham. She was in her 89th year at the time. Helen was the beloved spouse of the late Pat Sweeney and the loving mother of Frank and Brenda, Dan, Anne Marie, Jim and his wife Diane, Maureen and her husband Calvin Rydall, Mary Kay and her husband André Jolin, and John. She was cherished as a grandmother by Erin (Marc), Ryan (Andrea), Melissa (Julian), Sean (Charlene), Becky (Sisco), Allison, Eric (Erica), Dillon, Michael, Thomas, and Emilie. Additionally, she was a great-grandmother to Riley, Madeliene, Zachary, Keenan, Renee, Aubrey, Luke, and Hannah. Helen is survived by her sister Marjorie Simon and fondly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Marguerite Sexsmith, her siblings and their spouses, her uncle Leonard Walsh, and her daughters-in-law Sue Sweeney and Chris Sweeney.

Visitation for Helen will take place at the McCulloch-Watson Funeral Home in Durham on October 3, with the opportunity to pay respects occurring from 4 – 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Dornoch on October 4 at 12 p.m. Prior to the Mass, visitation at the church will be held from 10:45 – 11:45 a.m. Following the Mass, Helen will be laid to rest at St. Paul’s Catholic Cemetery. The family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to St. Paul’s Catholic Church or the Durham Agricultural Society in memory of Helen Sweeney.

Furthermore, Helen was a devoted grandmother, loved deeply by Erin (Marc), Ryan (Andrea), Melissa (Julian), Sean (Charlene), Becky (Sisco), Allison, Eric (Erica), Dillon, Michael, Thomas, and Emilie. She was also lucky to be a great-grandmother to Riley, Madeliene, Zachary, Keenan, Renee, Aubrey, Luke, and Hannah. Her sister Marjorie Simon cherished her memory, while her numerous nieces and nephews remember her fondly. Helen was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Marguerite Sexsmith, her siblings, their spouses, her uncle Leonard Walsh, and her daughters-in-law Sue Sweeney and Chris Sweeney.

Before the Mass, visitation will be possible from 10:45 – 11:45 a.m. at the church. Helen will be laid to rest at St. Paul’s Catholic Cemetery.
