Hildegard Margarete Reel, a beloved individual who was cherished by many, peacefully passed away on Sunday, October 22nd, at the remarkable age of 102. She was surrounded by her loved ones in her home in West Vancouver. Hildegard, born on July 2, 1921, in Weimar, Germany, lived an adventurous life. She resided in different cities such as Munich, The Hague, Copenhagen, Verona, and Rome before retiring with her late husband, William C. Reel, on the shores of Lago Maggiore in Ascona, Switzerland.

Everyone who had the privilege to know Hildegard affectionately called her “Oma,” a title bestowed upon her by her three granddaughters. Throughout her life, Hildegard left a lasting impression on people with her radiant smile, zest for life, quick wit, and the abundant warmth and positivity she shared with everyone she encountered.

Hildegard was not only a loving presence but also the spirited matriarch of a family comprised of strong-willed women. In her memory, it is hoped that we all cultivate the ability to find joy even in the midst of seriousness and to embrace celebratory moments with a glass of prosecco. She also taught us the importance of dancing as a form of exercise and the significance of maintaining a playful and flirtatious nature, as it contributes to a youthful spirit that transcends time.

While Hildegard may no longer be with us physically, her shining spirit lives on through her daughter, Heidi Baroness von Pfetten; her three granddaughters, Gabriela, Stefanie, and Verena; as well as her great-grandson, Theo. The impact she had on their lives will continue to inspire and guide them as they remember and honor the remarkable woman that she was.
