Jack Read, a beloved resident of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 2, 2023, at the age of 92. Surrounded by his loving family at home, Jack’s private family services were held, with assistance from Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion.

Born on May 5, 1931, in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, Jack was the cherished son of Harry and Irene Read. After graduating from Central Collegiate High School, he pursued higher education at Monmouth College (IL) and completed his studies at the University of Iowa Dental School. Jack was previously married to Eleanor McCall Kay and they were blessed with four children.

On December 22, 1984, Jack found love once again and was united in marriage to Elaine Marie Ficken in Central City, Iowa. Together, they co-founded Dental Health Partners, where Jack dedicated 30 years of his life practicing dentistry. As he grew older, he also took on the role of a dentistry teacher at the University of Iowa.

Jack led an active and adventurous life, reveling in the beauty of nature and enjoying activities such as golf, snow skiing, and sailing on Lake Superior. Traveling was another passion of his, particularly relishing trips to Scotland to celebrate his Scottish heritage. He was an enthusiastic member of the El Kahir Shrine Horse Patrol and a devoted fan of the Hawkeyes. Additionally, Jack found solace and joy in reading. His warm presence and kind spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.

Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Elaine, and his children: Lyndsay Read McCall of Palouse, Washington, John M. Read of Brandon, Iowa, Carol L. (Michael) McNamara of Coggon, Iowa, and Craig A. (Judy) Read of Springfield, Missouri. He also leaves behind grandchildren Shaun McNamara, Michelle McNamara, and Colin (Katie) McNamara, three great-grandchildren, and his extended family, Josh (Lizette) Willia and Jeremy (Kim) Willia. Additionally, his faithful four-legged companion, Sadie, brought him much happiness.
