James Charles Ashdown, the beloved son of Cyril and Midge, brother to Bruce, husband to Gwendolyn, father to Brian and Karen (Martin Lavoie), and grandfather to Julien and Gabrielle, peacefully passed away with tremendous dignity on September 26, 2023. Having bravely served as a veteran in the US Marine Corps, Jim survived the perils of combat in Vietnam and returned home to build a loving family. For over half a century, Jim and Gwen cherished their marriage and took joy in exploring the world together, fueled by their shared passion for golf and their loved ones. After dedicating 3 decades to the BC Ambulance Service, Jim spent his retirement years as a course marshal at NorthView and Nicowynd golf courses. Known for his fondness for socializing over a cocktail, he will be deeply missed by his adored Ocean Park community and his beloved family. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated and compassionate staff at Melville Hospice in Whiterock.

Even after facing the hardships of war during his time in Vietnam as a courageous US Marine Corps veteran, Jim emerged victorious and dedicated his life to nurturing his growing family. Jim’s unwavering commitment to his marriage was manifested throughout 55 remarkable years, during which he and Gwen explored countless destinations while developing an unbreakable connection, united by their passion for golf and their cherished loved ones.
Jim’s relentless dedication was further showcased during his 30-year tenure with the BC Ambulance Service, where he tirelessly served the community. Upon his retirement, he found solace and purpose as a course marshal at NorthView and Nicowynd golf courses, avidly engaging in his favorite pastime while contributing to the sport’s vibrant community. His convivial nature, often enjoyed with a cocktail in hand, made him an integral part of both his Ocean Park neighborhood and his family, leaving an irreplaceable void with his absence. In their time of grief, the family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the diligent and compassionate staff at Melville Hospice in Whiterock for their unwavering support.
