James Mayhew

James (Jim) Mayhew, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 79 on July 9, 2023. Surrounded by his loving family, Jim peacefully departed after a brief stay at VGH. Known for his kind and caring nature, Jim touched the lives of many, from high-ranking corporate executives to his adoring grandchildren. His wisdom, advice, and sincere kindness had a profound impact on countless souls.

Jim had a passion for sports, including hockey, skiing, hiking, F1, the Seahawks, and his beloved Canucks. Countless family memories were made during Whistler ski vacations, summer camping trips, road adventures, Sunday dinners, Christmas celebrations, Lobster Fest gatherings, bedtime stories, and captivating speeches. Jim’s deep affection for his “spirited German Shepherds” remains etched in the hearts of those who knew him.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 58 years, Joan, along with their children and their families. Surviving him are his son Ken (Suzanne, Kate, and Lia), son Brian (Sharon, Benjamin, and Christopher), daughter Cathy (Darren, Jaime, and Alyssa), son Keith (Dore, Owen, Ethan, and Erik), and brother Bob and his family.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held later this summer. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation. The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Thomas Nevill and Dr. Carolyn Icton, Jim’s dedicated family doctor, as well as the institution for providing Jim with more than two decades of extended life.

Jim Mayhew lived a life characterized by love and fulfillment, leaving behind cherished memories that will endure through generations.
