September 17, 2023

Dr. Janice Edith Nelson, a respected psychologist, passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at the age of 72 at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. She had been bravely fighting kidney and heart diseases for an extended period. Janice, known affectionately as Jan, was born on June 27, 1951, in Vancouver, as the younger of two children to John Irving Nelson and Edith Lillian Nelson (nee Paul). She pursued her education at UBC for her undergraduate degree, followed by a Masters at Western Washington and a PhD at McGill University. Throughout her life, Janice mainly resided in the lower-mainland before eventually settling in Nanaimo. Tragically, she lost her husband of 34 years, Larry Hook, in 2013. Janice is survived by her two sons, Ross Paul and Terence Hook, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

Janice will be remembered for her strong sense of community and her unwavering commitment to helping others. She was genuinely adored by her friends, co-workers, and acquaintances. With a successful career as a psychologist, Janice dedicated her time to Richmond Mental Health and had her own private practice. Additionally, she selflessly contributed her skills as a volunteer to organizations such as the Nanaimo Non-Violence Society and the Surrey Association for Early Childhood Education (SAECE).

A memorial service will take place at First Memorial in Nanaimo on October 4th at 1pm to honor Janice’s life. Rather than sending flowers, those interested in showing their support are kindly encouraged to make contributions to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
