May 15, 2023

Joan McLauchlin, aged 77, passed away unexpectedly at Wentworth Manor on May 15, 2023. She was born in Creston, BC, to Bob and Edith Currie. At the age of nineteen, Joan relocated to Calgary, AB, to pursue secretarial studies. She worked at the Holy Cross Hospital and formed long-lasting friendships. Subsequently, she held positions at Texaco Canada in the Health Centre and Imperial Oil as a land analyst. After a blind date, Joan and Larry fell in love and tied the knot in August 1967. Together, they embraced parenthood, raising their twins, Robb and Jenny, and delighting in their roles as grandparents.

Known for her remarkable sense of humor, generosity, and selflessness, Joan was an extraordinary mother, grandmother, and friend. Family always came first for Joan, and her loved ones were aware of the immense affection she had for them. Her compassionate nature extended beyond her family, as she willingly assisted at Living Spirit United Church, cared for elderly friends, chauffeured her children to dance and bagpipe band lessons, and lovingly babysat her grandchildren. Joan’s tenacity was unmatched, evident through her zeal for cleaning and organizing, as well as her affinity for shopping and bargain hunting.

Joan cherished her Scottish heritage and had the privilege of visiting Scotland in 2016 alongside her children and grandson, Aidan. The trip provided her with unforgettable memories, such as convincing a farmer to gather his Highland “coos” for photos with these curious Canadians. Additionally, she reveled in spending summer days with her family at Carefree Resort.

The loss of Joan leaves a profound void for her son Robb McLauchlin (Kerri-Ann), daughter Jenny Huizinga (Paul), and grandchildren Aidan, Ainsley, K, and Jack. She is also survived by her brother Ian Currie, numerous dear friends, and extended family. Joan’s husband Larry predeceased her in 2008. Joan’s loved ones feel blessed to have had her as a mother, grandmother, and friend. They deeply mourn her absence.

In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes can be made directly to the Canadian Red Cross in support of those affected by the conflict in Ukraine. Funeral Services will take place at Lakeview United Church on August 31, 2023, with a reception to follow. Condolences, memories, and photographs can be shared and viewed at the funeral home’s website. To honor Joan’s memory, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes.
