Johannes DETERING
Johannes “John” Detering, aged 90, peacefully passed away on September 4, 2023, surrounded by his family. Born in Amsterdam in 1934, he embarked on a remarkable journey that eventually led him to Canada in 1955. John had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed exploring new places. He often mentioned that he had spent more years in retirement than in his working years, and he cherished every moment, relishing the sights and experiences along the way. John was married to the Late Elizabeth and together they had two sons, Ben (late Jean) and Rob (Kit). He is survived by his loving grandchildren Linda (Don) and Jennifer (Kelly), and his great-grandchildren Shawn, Avery, and Reid. John is also survived by his siblings Annie, Tiny, Mirjam, Thea, and Rens, but sadly predeceased by his siblings Jan, Gerard, Theo, Ben, and Ria.
We extend special gratitude to Caroline and Brian for being exceptional friends and neighbors to John. We would also like to express our heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated staff at Victoria Hospital Oncology and Emergency departments for providing compassionate care during his illness. In accordance with John’s wishes, his body has been cremated, and no formal service or visitation will be held in his memory.

Born in Amsterdam in 1934, John sought new horizons and eventually found himself settling in Canada in 1955. Adventure beckoned him, and he eagerly embraced every opportunity to explore. It was often remarked that John spent more time in retirement than in his professional career, a fact he took great pride in. He warmly recalled the countless joys and wonders he encountered along the way. John was united in marriage to the Late Elizabeth and together they had two sons, Ben (late Jean) and Rob (Kit). He leaves behind a legacy cherished by his grandchildren Linda (Don) and Jennifer (Kelly) and great-grandchildren Shawn, Avery, and Reid. Although John’s siblings Annie, Tiny, Mirjam, Thea, and Rens continue to carry on his spirit, he was preceded in death by his siblings Jan, Gerard, Theo, Ben, and Ria.
During his final years, John was fortunate to have the friendship and support of Caroline and Brian, who proved to be exceptional friends and neighbors. Additionally, the compassionate care provided by the staff at Victoria Hospital Oncology and Emergency departments touched the hearts of John’s loved ones. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place, and a service or visitation will not be held to honor his memory.
