October 27, 2023

Janek “John” Kraska passed away peacefully on October 27, 2023, at the age of 95, surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 14, 1928, Janek lived a remarkable and eventful life, overcoming obstacles as a child of war and forging his own path. He met his beloved wife Jadwiga in England, and they enjoyed 68 years of marriage together. Eventually, they settled in Calgary, where Janek worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway and took on various side jobs. Janek was a proud Polish man who actively participated in the community, serving as the President of the Combatants Association for 18 years, engaging in volunteer work, and being a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Janek’s home was always open to friends and family, and he and his wife often hosted joyful feasts. Janek is survived by his cherished wife Jadwiga, his children Teresa (Keith Turner), Richard Kraska, Caroline (Pat Bomford), son-in-law Brian St. Germain, twelve grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Sadly, he was preceded in death by his daughter Dorothy St. Germain, his first grandson Andrew Turner, his sister Stefie Zygadlo (Walter), and his niece Krystina Lorne. The family extends their deep gratitude to Lukasz Zakiewicz and his team, as well as the staff at Age Care Glenmore Pumphill for their exceptional care.

In memory of Janek, memorial tributes may be made to The Alzheimer Society of Alberta and the Northwest Territories. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Prayers and Tributes at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Calgary on Sunday, November 5, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will then be held at the same church on Monday, November 6, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception in the Church Hall. A Graveside Service will take place at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Memories, condolences, and photos can be shared at the website http://www.MHFH.com. Additionally, McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes will plant a tree in Janek’s honor in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area.
