John Matheson

Father John Matheson, a Jesuit priest, passed away on October 19, 2023, at the age of 93 at René Goupil House in Pickering, ON. He was born on July 3, 1930, in Brooklyn, New York, to parents Daniel Matheson and Katherine Scannell. Father Matheson dedicated 73 years of his life to the Society of Jesus, being ordained in 1962. Throughout his extensive ministry, he made significant contributions to various areas. For over five decades, he lectured on films at Campion College in Regina. In 1969, he pursued his studies in Communication Arts at the University of Los Angeles and simultaneously served as the director of the Media Center for Black Catholics for four years. Upon returning to Canada in 1973, he assumed the role of promoter of Modern Communications Media. Well-known for his strong commitment to social justice, Father Matheson later served the Chinese Catholic community in Regina and founded the Friends on the Outside (FOTO) ministry in 2002, providing support for prisoners and emphasizing restorative justice. In 2017, Father Matheson relocated to Rene Goupil House in Pickering, where he continued to actively contribute by organizing the library and participating in liturgies. Despite experiencing hearing loss, he remained a fervent conversationalist and sought deep discussions on spiritual and secular matters. Father Matheson was cherished for his non-confrontational personality and his calming presence in the company of others.
