August 22, 2023

John (Ian) Suttie Hutchison, affectionately known as Ian, passed away on August 22nd, 2023, after a brief illness. He was born in 1950 in Motherwell, Scotland, to Charlotte (Suttie) and Thomas Hutchison. Ian had a close bond with his mother and his grandmother, May, and sister, Maureen.
After completing his Millwright apprenticeship in 1971, Ian embarked on a journey to Canada, driven by his adventurous spirit. He first settled in Toronto before making his way to Nova Scotia. There, he worked for Michelin Tire and later established his own business specializing in engine repairs for various industries. In 1979, Ian seized an opportunity to work in the oil sands industry in Fort McMurray. What was initially intended as a temporary job turned into a three-decade-long career at Syncrude. Ian was highly respected by his colleagues, who fondly referred to him as “Hutch.” He took pleasure in mentoring young coworkers and showcasing his culinary skills during “cook ups” with the night shift. Throughout his professional life, Ian handled crises with a calm and reassuring demeanor, often accompanied by a cup of tea.
In 1981, Ian experienced the joy of fatherhood with the birth of his beloved daughter, Janice. After retiring from Syncrude in 2009, he joined his longtime partner, Karin Buss, in Edmonton, before relocating together to Victoria, B.C. Following a 25-year courtship, Ian and Karin decided to marry and eloped to Rome for their wedding in 2011, reflecting their shared passion for travel. Over the course of their thirty-year journey, they explored 39 countries, always finding excitement and adventure in unexpected places. Ian had a laid-back outlook on life, always ready with a joke or a laugh, and had a knack for finding the humor in any situation. He was genuinely kind, considerate, and empathetic towards others, earning the respect and admiration of all who knew him. Ian’s presence will be deeply missed.
Ian leaves behind his cherished wife, Karin, his daughter, Janis Hutchison, his sister, Maureen Murray, his nephews, Ian, David, and Stuart Murray, as well as numerous close friends. A memorial service will be held at the Royal Oak Burial Park and Sequoia Centre (McCall Gardens) in Victoria on September 29, 2023, starting at 3 pm.
