October 30, 2023

John Meyerhoff, aged 86, peacefully passed away at his residence in Ladner, BC on October 30th. Born in Vancouver, he was the second eldest among six siblings. At the tender age of 14, while working at the Province, John accidentally spilled ink on Barbara (Babs) Devitt’s dress, unknowingly setting the foundation for a deep and everlasting connection. Although they lost touch during high school, John pursued work in the shipyards upon graduating and found himself employed as a deckhand. After several summers spent on ships and camps in Kildala, John decided to remain in Vancouver and embark on a career in education. It was during this time that he and Babs reconnected, leading to their marriage in 1956. Together, they nurtured their four children on Athlone St, bonding during family road trips and cherished vacations in Maui.

John’s passion for sharing anecdotes from his youth was rivaled only by his encyclopedic knowledge when watching Jeopardy. His retirement brought him joy through leisurely activities like bowling and tending to his beloved garden. Every Saturday morning, he skillfully completed the New York Times crossword puzzle in the Vancouver Sun.

In 2012, John and Babs decided to relocate to Ladner. Unfortunately, in 2013, after celebrating 56 years of marital bliss, Babs passed away unexpectedly, leaving John bereaved. He is survived by his four children, Bruce (Viva), Andrew, Dean, and Kate (Bjorn), along with his 11 grandchildren, Halle, Aysha, Daniel, Reece, Riley, Spencer, Meijun, Sean, Fiona, Sophia, and Aiden.

A Celebration of Life in honor of John will take place at the Delta Funeral Home (5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Delta, BC V4K 1W6) on Tuesday, November 7th, 2023 at 1:00 pm.
