Kathryn Janette (Gillin) Palmer, born on June 17, 1951, peacefully passed away at her home on October 16, 2023, at the age of 72. Surrounded by her loving family, Kathy’s departure brought immense sadness. She was the cherished wife of John Palmer for an incredible 49 years and the adored mother of Kevin (Laurie) of Woodstock and Jenny (Scott Battram) of Norwich. Kathy took immense pride in her role as a grandmother to Taylor, Braeden, and Bryce Palmer, as well as Corelynn, Brantley, and Nolan Battram.
Kathy’s journey began in Listowel, where she grew up with her siblings Kim, Bill, Jan, and Kent. Following her secondary education, Kathy pursued her passion for nursing by attending the Brantford General Hospital School of Nursing. Graduating in 1972, she dedicated her career to critical care nursing in Kitchener. It was in the same year that Kathy met John, and their love led to a meaningful marriage on December 20, 1974. The couple began dairy farming on Quaker Street, remaining there until 2012 when they relocated to the village of Norwich.
Nature held a special place in Kathy’s heart, and she took joy in the farm’s livestock, crops, and all aspects of rural life. Her fondness for the farm animals, particularly the calves, barn cats, and cherished farm dogs, was evident. Kathy had a knack for creating stunning flower gardens, which brought beauty to her home and yard. Music played a significant role throughout her lifetime, with Kathy actively participating in the Norwich United Church choir for many years. She was formerly an organist at the church and was also involved with the Norwich Musical Society band. Known for her kind and compassionate nature, Kathy consistently demonstrated generosity towards others, sharing her beautiful flowers, food preserves, and various treats.
In her declining health, Kathy faced disappointment, unable to continue activities she had always enjoyed. Nevertheless, her fierce independence and determination persisted despite increasing health challenges. While Kathy had a deep love for flowers, she expressed her preference for loved ones to honor her memory through acts of kindness or donations to a charity of their choice. As per Kathy’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and there will be no visitation or funeral service. A private family memorial will be held at a later date, entrusted to the Arn-Lockie Funeral Home in Norwich, ON.
In conclusion, Kathy’s family sends a heartfelt message to their beloved mom, expressing their love and encouraging her to rest easy.
