Kathyrne “Kathy” Louise Borwick, a beloved member of the Calgary community, passed away on July 24, 2023, at the age of 85. Kathy was a cherished daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. As the youngest of six siblings, she was the last of the King siblings. Born in Drumheller, AB, Kathy grew up on a farm near Michichi, where she learned valuable life skills such as gardening, cooking, baking, and even driving a tractor.

Kathy’s education began at a country school, where she rode a horse and buggy to attend classes. Later, she moved to Drumheller for high school, where she met the love of her life, Ian Borwick. After graduation, Kathy pursued further education at business school in Calgary, while Ian attended university in Edmonton. Kathy eventually joined Imperial Oil in Edmonton, where she worked before marrying Ian on November 28, 1958. The couple had four children: Erin, Colleen, Jim, and Bruce.

While Kathy and Ian primarily resided in Calgary, they embarked on an exciting adventure in 1969, moving their entire family to California. They spent four wonderful years there, creating lifelong friendships before returning to Calgary in 1973. Kathy’s dedication to her family was unwavering, and after many years as a stay-at-home mother, she pursued a career as an accountant, achieving success while balancing her household responsibilities. As the years went by, Kathy transitioned into the role of a loving and cherished Grandma, which later transformed into the endearing title of Grandma K as she became a great-grandmother.

Kathy’s joys in life included her renowned baking, gardening skills, and her love for card making. Her children and grandchildren were fortunate to inherit her cherished recipes, with her famous cinnamon bread being a family favorite. Sunday dinners hosted by Kathy and Ian were filled with laughter and love as the family gathered around the dining room table. Her personalized cards, crafted with love, were treasured by friends and family, showcasing Kathy’s creativity and thoughtfulness. A dedicated golfer, Kathy spent thirty years as a member of the Pinebrook Golf and Country Club, enjoying golfing vacations with Ian, including a memorable trip to St. Andrews in Scotland. Ultimately, Kathy cherished spending time with Ian, her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and their beloved dog, Rio. Known for her strength and independence, Kathy’s absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved her.

Kathy is survived by her loving husband Ian, her children Erin, Colleen, Jim, and Bruce, as well as her ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind other family members, including Don, Ron, Shirley, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, Archibald and Mary King, Ian’s parents, Charley and Leola Borwick, her sisters and brothers, Vera, Jessie, Jacqueline, Marie, Allen, Russell, and Maureen, and her son-in-law Thomas. To celebrate Kathy’s life, a gathering will be held at the Varsity Community Center on August 26, 2023. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial tributes to local food banks or a charity of choice. Memories, condolences, and photos can be shared and viewed at http://www.calgarycrematorium.com.
