Katri Hilja Juliana Lahti, affectionately known as Julie, peacefully passed away on August 16, 2023, at the Espanola Nursing Home, surrounded by her loving family. She was 91 years old. Julie was born on October 3, 1931, in Beaver Lake, Ontario, to Urho and Aune Harju. She had two brothers, Fred and Henry. In 1949, she married Leo Luopa, and together they raised five children: James, Beth, Richard, Robert, and Ronald. Julie and Leo owned and operated an ESSO service station in Beaver Lake for many years.

Julie was not only a devoted mother but also an incredible cook and baker. She had a special talent for creating delicious meals and treats using whatever ingredients she had on hand. Her generosity and warmth were evident in the way she always welcomed visitors with fresh coffee and her famous Finnish pulla. Julie was also known for her love of dancing. It was through dancing that she met Eugene Lahti, who would become her second husband in 1991. They created a beautiful life together in their home on the shore of the Vermilion River, surrounded by stunning flower beds and a thriving garden.

Julie’s cheerful nature and ready smile touched the hearts of everyone she met. The staff at the Espanola Nursing Home grew fond of her and showed her warmth and affection until the end. Julie embraced life with grace and sisu, always making the best out of every situation. She will be deeply missed by her friends, family, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A celebration of Julie’s life will be held on September 2, 2023, at the Beaver Lake Sports & Cultural Club. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Beaver Lake Sports & Cultural Club or the Espanola Nursing Home.
