August 10, 2023

The passing of Kayla Wine Shoctor deeply saddens her family. She leaves behind her son Marshall, daughter Naomi, daughter-in-law Debby, and grandchildren Jeremy and Hannah. In addition, she is survived by her brother Norman and sister Myrna. Sadly, Kayla was pre-deceased by her beloved husband Joseph (Joe) and son Ian. Her brother Larry, sister-in-law Judy, and brother-in-law Don also passed before her.

Kayla was born in Winnipeg to Harry and Enid Wine, and she spent her formative years in Saskatoon. She pursued higher education at both the University of Saskatchewan and McGill University. In 1951, she married Joseph Shoctor and relocated to Edmonton. Together, they embarked on numerous adventures, traveling the world. Kayla stood firmly by Joe’s side as he cultivated his career as a lawyer and theater producer. She actively contributed to the establishment and growth of the Citadel Theatre, serving as President of the Citadel Board of Directors. For over two decades, she partnered with Arliss Miller, leading theatre tours to New York, London, and other locations on behalf of the Citadel. Kayla also held significant positions within the community, including serving on the Senate of the University of Alberta, being President of the National Council of Jewish Women, and holding the Co-President role at The Canadian Friends of Hebrew University, Edmonton alongside Elexis Schloss. Moreover, she and Joe demonstrated their commitment to philanthropy by supporting various organizations and causes, particularly those within the Edmonton Arts, Cultural, and Jewish communities.

The burial ceremony for Kayla took place at the Edmonton Jewish Cemetery on August 14th, 2023. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends, and her memory will endure. Donations in her honor can be made to the Edmonton Community Foundation, specifically designated as “In Memory of Kayla Shoctor.”
