Liane Holmes

Liane Maria-Theresia Holmes, a resident of Tweed, Ontario, peacefully passed away at Belleville General Hospital on July 6, 2023, at the age of 64, following a brief battle with cancer. Liane is survived by her beloved children, Nicholas Holmes and Rosie Steketee, as well as her partner Murray Holmes. She is also mourned by her parents, Harry and Rosemarie Essbauer, sister Manuela Egenberger, and brother Hardie Essbauer. Liane will be deeply missed by her grandchildren Lucas, Benjamin, Abby, Kristen, Brendan, as well as her great-grandchild Raina Steketee. She was also cherished by numerous friends, nieces, nephews, and extended family members in Germany.

Liane was born on August 8, 1958, and emigrated from Germany to Canada at the age of 15 with her father. During her children’s early years, she delighted in taking them to the Sandbanks to enjoy the sunshine and camping trips with friends. As a devoted mother, Liane worked tirelessly to support her family. It was during her time at school that she formed an enduring friendship with Penny Pounder. Over the years, Liane had the joy of welcoming five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter into her life. Her love for her grandchildren was evident in the radiant smile that adorned her face whenever she was with them. As a proud Nana, Liane braved the Go Train system to visit Burlington for special occasions, birthdays, and every Christmas morning. Liane found fulfillment in her work for Tweed’s Community Care and expressed deep gratitude for her volunteers and staff.

Liane was renowned for her loyalty as a friend, investing time and effort into visits, text messages, and phone calls. She lived life to the fullest, embracing fun, humor, and the ability to make others laugh. Her heart was as vast as the sky, and she possessed a unique ability to make others feel loved with just three little words: “I love you.” In honor of Liane’s lifelong commitment to caring for others, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Community Care for Central Hastings Foundation, in lieu of flowers.

A service to celebrate Liane’s life will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2023, from 1-1:30 p.m. at Burke Funeral Home (613-968-6968) located at 150 Church St, Belleville, Ontario. Following the service, a visitation will take place from 1:30 to 4 p.m.
