Margaret M. Walsh, a highly accomplished individual with an impressive academic background, sadly passed away on July 7, 2023, in Calgary, Alberta. She was born on August 30, 1958, in St. Helens, Lancashire, UK. Margaret valiantly fought against cancer for two years before her passing, and she was surrounded by her beloved family at Foothills Hospital during her final moments.

Margaret will forever be remembered as a brilliant and loving mother, wife, mentor, and academic, who possessed one of the warmest and most beautiful smiles anyone had ever seen. Graduating from a hotel school in the UK, Margaret’s exceptional academic achievements earned her the prestigious CLEGG Award. It was during her time at college that she met her husband Robert, whom she shared 44 years of marriage with. In 1979, Margaret and Robert decided to start a family and pursue their careers in Canada.

Throughout her career, Margaret exhibited an unwavering commitment to excellence. She spent nine years in Winnipeg, where she served as a Sales Manager and later as the Front Office Manager at The Fort Garry Hotel. Following this, she took on the role of Assistant Director of the Health Sciences Centre’s housekeeping and services division. In 1988, Margaret and her family relocated to Calgary, where she embarked on a remarkable 35-year journey at SAIT’s School of Hospitality and Tourism. As the Academic Chair of the program, Margaret played a pivotal role in developing the school’s Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management degree program and significantly elevated the institution’s international rankings.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Margaret had a deep passion for horses and cherished her annual trips to Spruce Meadows and the Calgary Stampede. She found joy in “GLAMping” adventures in the mountains and BC Interior and had a remarkable appreciation for refined wines and culinary delights.

Margaret is survived by her adoring husband Robert, their daughters Angela and Kirsten (who is married to Troy Davies), their grandson Dashton, her sisters Angela and Stephanie in the UK, and her brother Joe in Australia. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the exceptional medical teams who provided outstanding care, including the GYN/ONC team led by Dr. Sarah Glaze, the Palliative Care team guided by Dr. Jacqueline Carverhill, and the dedicated professionals on unit 42 at Foothills Hospital. Lastly, the family would like to extend a special acknowledgment to the people of Alberta, whose efforts have contributed to building one of the finest healthcare systems worldwide. Margaret’s legacy and impact will forever be cherished by those whose lives she touched.
