Maria MAHURA

Maria Mahura, a resident of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on September 24, 2023, at the age of 90. She was born on August 10, 1933, in Wostok, Alberta, and grew up in Central Alberta, always embracing her Ukrainian heritage. Maria dedicated her life to her family, being a loving wife, mother of five, and proud grandmother. She played a crucial role as a homemaker and supported her late husband Donald Mahura throughout his career.

Over the years, the Mahura family moved within Alberta as Donald’s position at Chevron progressed. Eventually, his job took the family to the Middle East and Africa, where Maria enjoyed a vibrant life. She was known for her incredible hosting skills, often organizing elaborate parties and events. Cooking and gardening brought her immense joy as well. Maria met Donald in March 1958, and they tied the knot just three months later.

Maria is survived by her children Annamarie Mahura (Philip Sargent), Craig (Dianne) Mahura, Marilyn (Robert) Belsher, Glen Mahura (Jackie Kirk), and Gary (Joanne) Mahura. Additionally, she leaves behind thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her sister Evelyn Suik and her brother Donnie Kozak, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, also mourn her loss. Maria was predeceased by her husband Donald Mahura, and her parents, William and Pauline Kozak, as well as her brothers Bill and John Kozak, and sisters Irene Banack and Rosie Geddes.

A Prayer and Tribute gathering in memory of Maria Mahura will take place on September 29, 2023. The Celebration of Life will follow the next day at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, where friends and family will bid their final goodbyes. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be live-streamed and later made available as a recording. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes can be made to STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service). To honor her memory, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area.

Maria Mahura will forever be cherished and remembered for her loving nature, dedication to family, and vibrant spirit. May she rest in peace.
