Marie SMITH

Marie Smith, aged 97, passed away peacefully at the Civic Hospital on October 31, 2023. She was born on January 8, 1926, and was predeceased by her parents Fred and Laura Groom and her sister Ada Mulligan. Marie was the beloved wife of Ralph Smith for over 60 years until his passing in 2011. She is survived by her daughters Susan (Henry) Brown, Sheila Smith, and Janet Smith (James Keenan). Marie was a loving grandmother to Kathleen Oliver, Henry Brown (Elizabeth Sanford), Claire Keenan, and Leo Keenan, and a doting great-grandmother to Isaac Oliver, Louisa Brown, and Alfie Brown. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews in British Columbia.

Marie was a long-time resident of Elmvale Acres, where she dedicated her time to being a homemaker and raising her family alongside her husband Ralph. She had a passion for baking and enjoyed swimming at the local pool. Marie was an avid curler and actively volunteered in her community. In her later years, she found joy in watching sports and was a spirited fan of the Blue Jays and the Ottawa Senators. Throughout her life, Marie touched the lives of those around her with her kindness and generosity.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the General Hospital (West End Villa) and the staff and volunteers at The Glebe Centre. They also extend a special thank you to neighbors Debbie and Shawn Allenby and their three sons, who were like family to Marie and always there to offer their support.

In memory of Marie, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, The Glebe Centre, or a charity of your choice, instead of sending flowers. A private family gathering will be held to honor and celebrate Marie’s life.
