Mary SPRATT

Mary Veronica (Von Cirtwill) Spratt peacefully passed away on October 20, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. Her sister, Elanor Cirtwill, her brother, Frances Cirtwill, and his wife Yvonne, her longtime partner, John Doyle, her children, Angela Spratt and her partner Graham Emery, Kathy Spratt and her spouse Will Maitland, and Mike Spratt and his wife Beth (Bishop), her stepdaughters Sara and Kirsten Doyle, her grandchildren Kirsten (Maitland) Cleary (Sam), Megan Maitland (John Marshall), Joseph, Courtney (Nick Bulmer), and Joshua Spratt, and Vanessa Sandher, as well as her great-granddaughter Ena Cleary, and nieces and nephews, will dearly miss and fondly remember her.

Born on Hill Island on November 15, 1937, to Ruby (Harbison) and Thomas Cirtwill, she was predeceased by her siblings Donny, Joe, Eugene, and Joanne. As the middle child of seven, Von grew up on the family farm and sawmill and learned the values of strength and independence at an early age. Instead of attending high school, she dedicated herself to supporting her aging parents and working hard on the farm.

At the age of 18, Von left the island to work at OSP, a plastics factory in Gananoque, where she met her husband Dominic (Paul) Spratt. Devoted to her family, Von quit her job to raise her three children and care for her extended family. Eventually, she returned to work at Parmenter and Bulloch forging rivets until retiring in 2001.

Following her retirement, Von enjoyed tending to her rock gardens, observing wildlife around her lakefront home, and cherishing time spent with her growing family. A celebration of Von’s life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Gananoque Branch 92, on Saturday, November 18, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Memorial donations to the Gananoque and District Humane Society or a charity of choice are welcomed.
