Matthew, the beloved son of Mary and Ernest, passed away at the age of 52. He is survived by his loving parents, Mary and Ernest, as well as his cherished siblings, brother Paul (Alicia) and sister Christie Carrington (Colin). Matt was also adored by his dear nephews, Sebastian and Callahan Smith, and treasured nieces Lauren and Evelina Harder. His extended family, including uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends, also mourn his loss.

Matt was born in Vancouver, BC on August 27, 1968. He graduated from the University of Victoria with a Bachelor of Arts in 1995 and later completed his Bachelor of Education in 1996. Since then, he had been a member of the BC College of Teachers. Matt found immense joy in mentoring students in the Burnaby School Board’s English Foundations program for adults, where his creative teaching style earned him great respect and admiration from his students.

Alongside his passion for teaching, Matt had a natural athleticism that allowed him to enjoy a wide range of sports. He also had diverse interests, including movies and collectibles. Despite facing numerous cancer treatments, Matt bravely fought his illness with unwavering optimism. His remarkable memory and exceptional generosity, paired with his unmatched sense of humor, will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A service of remembrance and thanksgiving for Matt’s precious and abbreviated life will take place at 1:30 pm on Sunday, October 15, at St Stephen’s United Church, located at 7025 Granville Street in Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St Paul’s Foundation for St John Hospice at 1081 Burrard St, Vancouver, BC V6Z 1Y6. Matt’s departure from this world leaves behind a void that will be felt by all whose lives he touched. As he said, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race.”
