Nora OEL

Nora Ann Oel, born on March 27, 1935, peacefully passed away on September 28, 2023, after a courageous ten-year battle with cancer. She was born in a humble home on the prairie in Benton, AB, and later lived in Oyen, AB, and Drumheller, AB, as her family moved around. Nora cherished her early years and often shared stories from that time. Eventually, her family settled in Calgary, where she started working for AGT and got married in 1958.

Nora is survived by her four daughters, Candace Bergen, Janice (Keith) Spengler, Kathryn (David) Spratt, and Lori Jo (Sam) Amberiadis. Her loving sisters Ruth Kon, Donna Colwell, Geraldine (Bo) Olsson, Sheila (David) Cronkhite; brother Joe (Carol) Diemert; and brother-in-law Dan Keeley also survive her. Sadly, she was preceded in death by her parents, Alex and Annie Diemert, as well as her sisters Theresa Diemert, Margaret Kanuka, Shirley Keeley, and her brothers-in-law Tom Fendall, Dave Colwell, Fred Kon, and Bo Kanuka. Additionally, she was preceded by her son-in-law Philip Dickson and step-grandson Liam Spengler.

Having raised her children, Nora found joy in working at Eaton’s for nine years. After retiring, she devoted herself to being a doting grandmother to her grandchildren and great-grandchild. In her free time, Nora enjoyed baking, cooking, traveling, and entertaining her loved ones. She also dedicated many years to volunteering for charitable organizations such as ‘Meals on Wheels’ and the ‘Flowers of Hope’ Foundation.

Nora will be deeply missed by her immediate and extended family, as well as the numerous friends she made throughout her life. The family expresses their sincere gratitude to the staff and volunteers at the Agape Hospice for providing Nora with a peaceful and comfortable environment during her short stay. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Nora Ann Oel can be made to ‘Meals on Wheels’ or the Agape Hospice.

Prayers in memory of Nora will take place at Evan J. Strong Funeral Services North on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Luke’s Catholic Church on Thursday, October 5, 2023. A reception will be held in the Parish Hall afterward. Photos, memories, and condolences can be shared with Nora’s family through their website.
