Patricia Blackwood
Patricia Joan Blackwood, age 95, peacefully passed away at her home on October 24, 2023. Born in Cornwall, England, she was the daughter of George and Florence Bowden. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her older brother, and her loving husband of 69 years, Colin MacDonald Blackwood. She is survived by her four children: David, Jennifer, Peter, and John, as well as eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren whom she adored.
Joan’s journey in life took her from being a nursing student at St Mary’s Hospital in London to becoming a war bride after meeting Canadian soldier Colin Blackwood. Together, they moved to Canada in 1948 and settled in northern Ontario before eventually relocating to New Brunswick with their family. Joan’s commitment to caring extended beyond her family as she graduated as a Nursing Assistant and Valedictorian of the NBCC Class of 1979. She was an active member of The Church of Good Shepherd and later Saint James the Less Anglican Church, dedicating herself to various ministries, outreach programs, and bible studies. Joan’s love for music was evident as she sang in the church choir and served on the Altar Guild.
During her final years, Joan was grateful to be surrounded by loving caregivers who cared for her at home. After a brief illness, she peacefully passed away with her family by her side. The family extends their deepest gratitude to Dr. Jane Ashfield and the Extra-Mural Program for their unwavering commitment to Joan’s well-being and care. Visitation for Joan will be held at Saint James The Less Church on November 2, and a funeral service will take place on November 3, followed by a burial after the reception.
In memory of Patricia Joan Blackwood, her family requests that any donations be made to the church or charity of choice. Joan will be remembered for her lifelong dedication to family, her faith, and her compassionate spirit that touched the lives of all who knew her.
