Patrick Gladwish

Patrick John Gladwish, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2023, with his family by his side. Born on March 30, 1953, in Sarnia, Ontario, Patrick was the eldest son of Patrick Sr. and Barbara Gladwish. Despite facing adversity early in life with a diagnosis of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, Patrick overcame this challenge and lived a life filled with adventure and determination.

Instead of pursuing a traditional path, Patrick embarked on a cross-country journey to meet his brother in Texas, leading them both to Mexico and countless adventures. Following his father’s advice, Patrick returned to Sarnia and learned the trade of pipe-fitting. However, his alter ego as a bouncer at the Happy Valley saloon proved to be a thrilling addition to his life. Eventually, Patrick and his lifelong friend Terry took over the Sarnia Fence company, marking the beginning of a series of successful business ventures.

During this time, a chance encounter introduced Patrick to his loving wife, Val. They were married on July 6th, 1979, and enjoyed a wonderful and loving 44-year marriage. Patrick’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to acquire the Oil Well Supply Company, which he successfully transformed into a thriving railroad contracting business. His intelligence, craftsmanship, and ability to build lasting relationships ensured his legacy in the field. Although his retirement was shadowed by the return of cancer, Patrick’s impact on the lives of his family, colleagues, and friends will never be forgotten.

We are grateful for the compassionate care provided by Dr. Allison Crombeen and Blaine from the Sarnia Palliative Care team during Patrick’s final days. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, followed by a Celebration of Life on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the same location. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sarnia Palliative Care or St. Joseph’s Hospice. Patrick will forever be cherished as a loving husband, father, and Gumpa.
